Champoluc, hub of Val d’Ayas: the Monterosa Ski area.

Monterosa Ski represents the largest and most renowned ski area in the Aosta Valley, embracing the territory at the foot of Monte Rosa, the second highest peak in Italy. It connects three valleys: the Ayas Valley, the Lys Valley and Valsesia, located on Piedmont territory.

The panoramic views offered by Monterosa Ski are simply extraordinary. From almost every point in the ski area there are 180-degree views of Monte Rosa, the Felik, Garstelet and Lys glaciers, as well as famous peaks such as Castor, Lyskamm and Dufour Peak.

This ski area has a total of 180 km of slopes of varying difficulty, most of which are fully interconnected. The only exception is the lifts at Antagnod and Gressoney S. Jean, which constitute small districts separate from the rest of the ski area. The vast area is served by modern lifts, offering skiers and snowboarders the greatest variety of slopes.

In the huts, you can enjoy typical dishes and relax on the spacious sun terraces, combining the pleasure of winter sunbathing with the delights of mountain cuisine.

The Monterosa Ski area includes the following ski areas: Alagna, Antagnod, Brusson, Champoluc, Gressoney La-Trinite, Gressoney Saint Jean and Champorcher.

    Champoluc – The ski resort

Champoluc, located in the heart of Val d’Aosta, is the hub of Val d’Ayas and a key element of the Italian ski scene thanks to its participation in the Monterosa Ski area. Its international reputation is based on three basic pillars: a wide variety of slopes suitable for all skiers, an exceptional summer offering including summer skiing, and the enchanting larch and pine forests that create a magical setting around the slopes.

Champoluc is located at the far end of the Three Valleys network, a vast network of lifts and slopes. The connection between Champoluc and Alagna, on the other side of the Three Valleys, is about 17 km, slightly longer than that between Courchevel and Val-Thorens. However, reaching Champoluc from Alagna takes about four hours by road if you miss the last elevator.

    Champoluc: slopes for everyone

The resort offers opportunities for all levels of skiers. Beginners can start on the dedicated slope near the main gondola. Intermediate skiers will find wide red runs leading down to the resort, including the Pistone slope. Experts will have a variety of slope options, especially in the other valleys, but the real highlight of the resort is off-piste skiing. A quick glance at the slope map shows that the Italian network is less developed than the French one, but outside the official slopes there are many excellent off-piste options, some served by lifts, that have long attracted expert skiers. The combination of abundant snow and lack of crowds seeking fresh snow makes Monterosa a paradise for cross-country skiers.

About 3 km downstream from Frachey is a short funicular railway with parking right at the base. Beyond Champoluc are the resorts of Antagnod and Brusson. Antagnod is a good option for bad weather days and offers some nice off-piste opportunities.

The village is along a one-way street that runs through the center and past several hotels to the bottom station of the gondola. Here there is a group of stores and bars that form the heart of the village. The atmosphere in the village is pleasant and reflects the rustic Italian charm.
